SERPENTINE STRUCTURE

SERPENTINE STRUCTURE

After commissioning Frank Gehry to create last year's pavilion, London's Serpentine Gallery have engaged Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA to create the structure which is to open in July and remain until October. The pavilion is set to be the architects’ first built structure in the UK and the ninth commission in the Gallery’s annual series of pavilions.

The pair are the latest addition to a prestigious list of past Serpentine architects that includes international stars such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and Daniel Libeskind. We think Sejima and Nishizawa are an excellent choice for the project - their office has pioneered an architecture that marries aesthetic simplicity with technical complexity, plays with light and perception. and is sought after by high-profile clients the world over; from the Louvre Museum in Lens, France, to the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. SANAA’s projects are open stages, which make visible the connection between the built structure, the users and the natural environment and this simple pavillion design proves their dexterity with these concepts brilliantly.
