TUBE SPAN

Scheduled for completion in late 2010, here's a look at a new design from Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to be built in Calagary, Canada.

The 'Calagary Peace Bridge' marks quite a departure for Calatrava - not a sail or spine in sight. Instead, the construction requirements (it had to be built without piers in the riverbed or vertical protrusions) meant that Calatrava had to come up with a different solution. He plumped for a helix, or tubular form which is not only unlike anything the architect has designed before, but also apparently deceptively complex in build process.

Set to cost around $24.5 million to build, the 130 metre long footbridge will span the Bow River and connect the North shore to the downtown, easing commuting for pedestrians or cyclists coming in and out of the city.
