RAISE IT UP

Armed with the thinking that if Jumbo Jets can stand on three legs, then so can anything; Japanese architecture office Satoshi Okada went forth with this unusual residential project.

Their house in Wakabadai has been built in Kawasaki-City, on the western edge of of Tokyo, and in order to make space for parking on a confined 116 square metre site, the architects opted to put the structure on stilts.

This house on three legs answered a brief to provide a low budget (around €200 000) structure with parking space for two cars. Additionally, it dealt with the issue of weak ground in the area - the result of a small river running nearby. Lifting the house up over the ground, meant that a wooden structure was selected too, primarily to reduce weight on the legs and it also cut costs down considerably.

The end shape, a rather appealing, and faintly gundam structure, floats like a little steel clad space ship on a suburban street.

We rather like this.
