Herreros Arquitectos have recently won an international competition for a Norwegian cultural landmark with their design for the Munch Museum and Stenersen Museum Collections.
The project, to be built in the Bjorvika Area of Oslo, will eventually total around 16,000 square metres and develops a complete city fragment - due to become pivotal for Oslo’s cultural life and image in the near future.
The Munch Museum and the Stenersen Museum complex aims not only to safeguard and disseminate the history and character of Norwegian culture; but Herreros were also faced with a unique opportunity to develop a contemporary museum concept as a cohesive element for the community. Not only for Oslo; but of all Norway.
The recently finished Opera house, BarCode complex (which is currently under construction), the Library and the Munch Museum; plus planned housing, offices and shops will end up extending the city centre and opening it out to the sea.
Conceived by Herreros as an institution which is open to the city, and highly visible, the museum structure will act not only just as a cultural destination in itself, but also as a focal point for walks and daily relaxation in the surrounding terraces, cafes and retail spaces.
