A CASTLE INTERVENTION BY BRITO RODRIGUEZ ARQUITECTURA

Brito Rodriguez Arquitectura is an international architecture studio formed by Inês Martins de Brito from Portugal and Gilberto Rodriguez from the States. They're currently based in Lisboa, Portugal and with over a decade of combined professional experience, they coordinate a multidisciplinary team which varies in size relating to the scale and complexity of each project.

We've been exploring their portfolio of perfectly minimal projects, and found this rather interesting proposal for a historic hilltop castle in Arraiolos, Portugal.

'Castle Intervention' is the studio's design to enclose the castle walls at Arraiolos by creating a place to stimulate the awareness of the visitor.

Departing from the existing topography and voids within the fortified walls, three elements were implemented.

Curvilinear edges slide away from the perimeter enclosure allowing the visitor to experience and discover spaces while observing the landscape, and the team also inserted a clean white vertical volume to inscribe the void of the adjacent ruins, which has the effect of creating a gestalt relationship to the other towers.

Additionally, the scheme involves an articulated void intended for hosting cultural events and various activities inside the surrounding castle walls.

Their selection of projects is well worth a further look if you like this - even if only for their beautifully executed drawings and images...
