ONGOING FORTHCOMING

There's something great for both object obsessives and fashion fiends this month at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

Currently running is an exhibition showcasing for the first time together the work of sculptor Julian Schwarz and ceramist Nicholas Rena. With a thorough mastery of their very different mediums, these two British artists have set up a dialogue that illustrates a shared rigour of form, an advanced sense of draftsmanship, and a love of strength and silence.

Their work also shares an emphasis on pure, stripped down, outsize and intentionally sculptural form. They draw inspiration, quite independently, from everyday forms such as pitchers, cups and bowls that have been in use for thousands of years.

And from tomorrow, until January 24th 2010, the museum is devoting a major exhibition to the extraordinary Madeleine Vionnet.

In 1952, the couturière donated 22 dresses, 750 dress patterns and 75 photo albums to Les Arts Décoratifs. The pieces on view have been selected from her major works between 1912 and 1939; restored with the aid of Natixis.
