THE TREATMENT OF SPACE

Caitlin Masley is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, and M.E. has fallen for her delicate translation, interpretation and exploration of urbanism.

Whether through the medium of drawing, installation or photography, Masley creates map-like representations and new structure - loaded with a  weight that goes beyond the mere documentation of habitat or geographical entity:

"In previous works, I am often "rebuilding" from ideas of possible worlds that spur on an organic architecture that “grows” to suit the needs of the landscape and its inhabitants. It is an obsessive treatment of space, meticulously recording every block, passageway, and texture on such a large scale to engulf the viewer, to locate ourselves.

Conceptually, the drawings and installations are imprinted within viewer’s minds and within traces of personal histories collectively tracking the invisible history of where; where we go, where we live, how we create, erase and redraw borders. The viewer sees a contrast of freedom and darkness; labyrinths to promote the intimacy of mapping. One asks, “You’ve been there? Or have I?” It looks so familiar; they are familiar territories. Resulting in completely organic and unpredictable map; seeped in an emotional and political urban texture of landscape and changing borders."

Currently, Masley is an artist-in-residence at the Abrons Art Center on Manhattan's lower eastside, and has recently created a new installation at the Islip Museum, NY and also Zaum Projects in Lisbon.

We recommend you look out for her work as part of 'liminal space' which kicks off in the New Year at at f(r)iction Project...
