BEYOND COLOUR AT BRUCE SILVERSTEIN GALLLERY

Sometimes, looking at images of the past, you forget colour.

Sometimes footage of, say, early fifties film icons seems so cool you'd swear it actually happened in black and white.

But a new show on now in New York (and open until October the 23rd) at Bruce Silverstein Gallery might change that.

'Beyond COLOR: Color in American Photography, 1950-1970'; is a re-examination of a pivotal period in photography’s history, when the artistic relevance of colour in fine art photography had yet to be determined.

The exhibition unites works for the first time by many of the “first generation” practitioners of colour photography including artists Marie Cosindas, Arthur Seigel, Harry Callahan, Eliot Porter, Saul Leiter, Marvin E. Newman, Pete Turner, Ruth Orkin and Ernst Haas.

Other highlights include works exhibited for the first time by Magnum’s first female member, Inge Morath, as well as a special slide projection of colour images by Garry Winogrand, which includes images that were never printed by the artist.
