Martin Margiela's label has carried the word 'Maison' in it for some time, but now the dream of of a Maison a la Martin Margiela is a reality. Yesterday Maison Martin Margiela showcased its new furniture prototypes and home objects at the Salone del Mobile; introducing wallpaper, bookshelves, lamps and carpets in a showroom which reproduced the company’s interior design workshop in Paris.
The decision to go into home furnishings is apparently still a work-in-progress, but is likely to take the form of design objects and furniture in a self-produced collection or in the development of one-off partnerships, according to Giovanni Pungetti, the brand's chief excecutive officer. The company will also do commissions for individuals or public interior design and architecture. “There are no limits,” said Pungetti, also pointing to collaborations with hotels and restaurants. “This installation is a visual stimulus, from fashion to lifestyle and atmosphere.”
“Margiela has always produced objects to complement the stores, but it used to be more about style than business. We thought the Salone would be a good opportunity to introduce the new direction in which the Maison is expanding.”
