The London Design Festival has announced its plans for the seventh Festival, running from the 19th to the 27th September 2009 with an array of innovative and creative events, installations and exhibitions taking place all over London. This year’s line up of things to see and do looks like it will again be a unique blend of hundreds of events and activities taking place in the capital. The varied programme includes international exhibitions, trade events, local showcases, installations, talks and seminars, product launches, receptions, private views and parties - all reflecting London’s place at the heart of the international design community and its position as a world creative capital.
One of the highlights looks to be The Battle of Trafalgar designed by Jaime Hayón which will take pride of place at the centre of the Festival in Trafalgar Square. It's a gigantic chess board for which the Spanish designer has created thirty-two ceramic chess pieces, each up to 2m tall. The installation - supported by Arts Council England and the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade - will be interactive, inviting the public to stage giant-scale chess matches; a design reinterpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar.
