ARCO ARCHETYPES

Under the able steerage of Jorre van Ast, Dutch furniture company Arco is positioning itself as a design brand to be reckoned with.

For this year's Milan Salone, Arco are showing a really flexible new collection which includes furniture variously designed by Jonas Trampedach, Dick Spierenburg, Bertjan Pot, Burkhard Vogtherr and Jonathan Prestwich.

We'd like to draw your attention to three of these pieces which we're rather impressed with...

'Sketch' by Burkhard Vogtherr and Jonathan Prestwich is a new, slim and contemporary version of the classic bucket seat. Thanks to the various base options the chair can serve not only as a luxury dining room chair in the home but also around conference tables in meeting rooms and in the office. The design is entirely in keeping with Arco’s signature aesthetic too - we think the clear line, pure shapes and understated style make for a piece with serious longevity.

'Tre' by the recently graduated Danish designer Jonas Trampedach is a series of playful occasional tables. The designer describes the tables as 'real domestic utensils' essentially pieces of equipment for the home.

Descended from simple farmhouse stools, a sophisticated use of materials and the application of meticulous detailing by Trampedach not only elevates this humble form, but also ensures that wood is used as efficiently as possible.

The small tables, which are supplied as a flat pack kit, are made entirely from left over pieces of wood in the factory; in-keeping with Arco’s desire to make sustainability high priority. As the name Tre suggests, the number three is central to the design. There are three top sizes (two round and one square), three table heights and three different materials. The tables are available in virtually any colour though, which makes for countless possible combinations.

'Scene' is a light and open cabinet system that consists of horizontal frames and insert units that ‘divide, support and define character’. Like Trampedach's 'Tre' tables, designer Dick Spierenburg has created 'Scene' to be flexible, and the insert units can be positioned as required which makes it possible to create a unique functional piece of furniture for any situation.
