Exhibited at DMY Berlin earlier in the month, this series of chairs by Veronika Wildgruber are not quite what they seem at first glance.

Anyone dropping their derriere upon the seat in anticipation of a soft landing would be in for a bit of a bump, as the soft fabric pillows are actually sculpted in solid wood.

'Soft Wood' was created by Wildgruber to illustrate how wood cannot be both soft, and comfortable. This series of chairs separates the material from its perceived characteristics which only become apparent on closer inspection.

Soft Wood is essentially a play with reality; proving you can't always rely on your perception:

"At first glance these are simple upholstered seats, but then you see that they are in fact crafted from wood, yet they are still as comfortable to sit in as the perceived soft chair." says Veronika.
