Paris-based gallery Perimeter Art & Design and Wilmotte Gallery, a spectacular exhibition space in Notting Hill designed by one of France’s leading architects, have got together for the first time to exhibit new work by Paola Petrobelli during the London Design Festival.
Born in Padua, Petrobelli trained as a biochemist, had a rather successful spell in international motor-racing, and has enjoyed a career as a glass designer since 1999 - having completed privately commisioned works for Damien Hirst, and interior pieces for the Club at the Ivy, London.
'Inside-Out' opens on the 18th of September at Wilmotte Gallery and will be Petrobelli’s first major UK show, featuring a range of her glass designs displayed in both a gallery and domestic context.
Petrobelli will recreate her own living space in order to highlight the interplay between the striking visual quality of the glass and its functionality.
Collaborating with the same Murano glass-maker since the start of her career as a designer, Petrobelli works in simple and rigorous sensuous shapes that express the architectural formal qualities of the glass, which she emphasises through her sophisticated use of colours.
New work includes a series of brick-like glass lights in three different sizes and colours, titled 'Modules A'. Some of these present unexpected ‘accidents’, such as fragile tiny insects embedded in the glass.
'Modules B' are an unusual combination of Murano hand-blown glass sheets for stained glass windows and can be used as individual ceiling lights or used in a combination to make dramatic coloured chandeliers.
The 'C series' ceiling lamps are characteristic of Petrobelli’s sophisticated colour palette and blend powder coated metal with Murano white and coloured glass.
Even unlit, Petrobelli’s lamps and containers remain mystical as the materials play beautifully with the natural daylight and bring a fascinating energy to the domestic space.
