First formed in Melbourne in 1991, Six Degrees is an architecture practice that can be said to mirror the new growth of the city itself.
Adapting to the recession of their founding years, the practice transformed warehouses and empty office buildings into residential spaces, making the best use of low cost and found materials.
The last fifteen years have seen Six Degrees grow into a multi-disciplinary practice undertaking every type of architectural commission.
Their early intelligent use of materials can be said to have evolved into something of a trademark style - as is superbly demonstrated by their recently completed Fitzroy Apartment [Melbourne, 2008]. Once residential housing, the building was subsequently converted into a warehouse space, only to be stripped back to its raw built structure to appear in its current guise, then complemented by a refined domestic intervention.
Antiques sit on stained plywood, whilst raw brick walls host grand gilt frames - the embodiment of Six Degree’s thoroughly modern juxtaposition of materials and intentions. The reult is an interesting and wholly livable space, imbued with the ability to receive and reflect its inhabitants.
