Valletta has loads of eating options to suit every taste and budget. There’s Museum Café for timpana, Malata for upmarket Mediterranean cuisine, and the ravioli to be found behind the Suq can’t be beaten. For something more modern, then fashionable bastion bar and restaurant 222 on Great Siege Road has one of the most interesting upcoming chefs who runs a pretty creative kitchen. If you’re after a well made cocktail and a menu for food to share that’s a little different, then this is the place to come. Rubino on Old Bakery Street, with it’s beautiful façade has long been a city favourite, and with their excellent selection of local ingredients and products it’s no mystery as to why. In Maltese, they have the best explanation of their daily menu and how it is cooked.
You should also visit the King’s Own Band Club on Republic Street who serve up generous portions of unpretentious traditional favourites. Go to Prego on South Street for ham and cheese toast, the décor, and to marvel at their immaculate spirit cabinets (not a speck of dust), and Ambrosia on Archbishop Street for their nice atmosphere and dedication to sourcing the best ingredients. Don’t forget to visit Rita in her beautiful bakery next to the Suq for gorgeous fresh bread too.
