An exhibition currently on show at NYC's International Center of Photography features work from more than forty of the most innovative photographers working in the fashion industry today. Entitled 'Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now, the show runs until May 3rd.
Weird Beauty draws together work of some pretty stellar names, reading like a list of who's who in contemporary fashion photography. Nan Goldin, Steven Klein, Nick Knight, Karl Lagerfeld, Steven Meisel, Richard Prince, Terry Richardson, Paolo Roversi, Hedi Slimane, Juergen Teller, Mario Testino, Tim Walker and (phew!) Bruce Weber have all contributed. To highlight the original context of these photographs, this exhibition additionally features hundreds of tear sheets, as well as around twenty original photographic prints, and online media. The inclusion of such a variety of presentational formats illustrates the diversity that is characteristic of current fashion imagery. Although the ultimate purpose of the fashion photograph is to promote high-end style and beauty products, the resulting works often emerge as some of the most imaginative and multifaceted images currently being produced - Cindy Sherman's presence in the lineup only reinforces this exhibition's intentions to underscore the creative and artistic impulses that are intertwined with this commercial industry.
