DARK ARTS

Gothic Glamour for the new season

A/W collections always turn up darker palettes, but for 2008, many designers showed pieces with a definite Gothic edge. Each designer took the theme down a slightly different path showcasing influences as diverse as Edward Scissorhands, 90s grunge, a touch of Victoriana and even the work of 60s artist Lee Bontecou (Rick Owens of course; who else is that obtuse?) With an all-black colour scheme, contrasting texture was key - cobweb lace, sheer chiffons, rough knits and leather were all designer choices.

Before you dust off that black crushed velvet from your youth, bear in mind this is luxe goth, so try incorporating elements such as smoky eyes, a black lace dress, or oversized black cashmere instead. For the more adventurous, we predict that black leather drainpipes will be this winter's hit: Topshop have reportedly sold out of their highstreet version on pre-order alone...
