These delicate and intricate pieces are the work of San Francisco - based artist and designer Sara Burgess.
Having studied printmaking at the University of Victoria and received her MFA in Illustration from San Francisco’s Academy of Art College, Sara has designed product lines, worked as an illustrator, animator and graphic designer in the UK, US and Canada.
But it's cutout work that seems to be her first love.
Burgess has been creating these silhouettes ever since she first put an x-acto blade to an unfinished sketchbook about fifiteen years ago and became hooked on 'what remains'.
Exploring the relationship between positive and negative space, she draws and then cuts, slicing thousands of lines until a story emerges – seeing and planning for what stays versus what falls away.
Unequivocally non-digital, this is the opposite of technology - raw, simple, soft, tangible and breathtaking.
