LIGHT PLAY

This residential project in Kanagawa, Japan, by Hiroyuki Tanaka Architects plays with light diffusion and connectivity in the most beautiful and subtle way.

After studying the context and the client's way of life, the office came up with the concept to connect the rooms of the house via small windows in walls - changing the relation between the separate spaces.
Whilst this allows light to diffuse through the whole structure, it also adds another element to a family home as its occupants can sense someone in the next room though colours changing.

We really like the clean white and warm wood colour palette too, which enables the house to act as a canvas for the different hues reflected by sunlight streaming in.

The niches and internal window frames additionally contribute detail to elegantly minimal surfaces, but the primary intention was not to 'design' the walls: "We just wanted to find the new relations between man and space" says Hiroyuki Tanaka.
