Reinier de Jong has recently designed and finished this staircase for a Dutch apartment interior.
Called 'Dub', the sparing lines and grey and white form gives it a rather abstract, sculptural feel; expressive in shape yet modest in colour.
Dub has been installed in a spacious apartment in the Hague, connecting the living space to a roof terrace.
Playing with the light from above, which makes it look both solid and airy at the same time (and reminding us of ice blocks somehow...) each step is two steps in one; all finished with a special coating to prevent them becoming slippery and dirty.
There are eight white blocks, plus sixteen grey steps and a balustrade made from aluminium strips and glass panels.
Whilst acting as structural intermediaries, the metallic elements also form part of the graphic composition as a whole, balancing the transparency of the glass and providing a textural contrast to the white and grey of the steps themselves.
