Japanese design studio Wonderwall have been charged with the design of British outerwear brand Mackintosh's first flagship store, and the result is a very classy affair.
Wonderwall deliberately chose to draw on Mackintosh's tradition and heritage as a starting point for the design, using classic materials such as wood and glass.
This choice not only reflects the strong craftsmanship identity that remains in the brand, but additionally has the effect of making the boutique appear as if it has always been there.
The shop consists of two levels: the ground floor and the basement.
Located on Mount Street in London's Mayfair area, the historic exterior has been retained, but inside, the classic warm wood and retro display cases are balanced with more contemporary elements such as slim, sharp lighting and a see-through display stage on the ground floor revealing the basement level.
All in all, we'd say the project successfully expresses Mackintosh's high quality old-school brand identity and provides an exclusive, refined shopping experience for those in search of the perfect raincoat.
