IRISH COFFEE

Egan's Coffee Bar and Roof Terrace, formerly a barber’s shop, reveals little of the slickly dramatic interior if you are stood looking at the preserved shop front on Main Street, but the project, undertaken by Architecture53seven, quickly takes a dramatic turn as you enter through a cranked passage almost like a geological cleft.

Inside the architecture and fittings are a veritable festival of concrete and steel. A white concrete bench and solid white oak stools contrast with the central black counter and black light rig. This long, linear space, with a mirror over the bench reflects the activity of the coffee shop with reference to the barber’s that formerly occupied the address. There is also an outside dining area too and the language of this external terrace translates into the interior of the coffee bar below, with a focus on casting most elements of furniture. It should be cold and impersonal, but it works well. We think this is a clever intervention and a thoughtful modern space well worth a look.
