NORMANN COPENHAGEN

M.E. puts our Milan Salone 2009 questions to Danish design protagonists Normann Copenhagen, and learned they've got an exclusive collection launch in the works for this year's Furniture fair. Here's what they had to say...

What have you been working on recently? Would you be able to give us any sneak previews of new projects you might be showing at Milan this year?

At Salone we are launching a whole new collection under the name New Danish Modern. New Danish Modern is a line of courageous design which springs from the Danish design tradition, where quality and attention to detail are given high priority. The line is designed by some of Denmark's best designers and produced exclusively in Denmark; respecting the idea of form in design and craftsmanship. The designers include Ole Jensen, Rikke Hagen, Jesper K. Thomsen, Søren Ulrik Petersen, Claydies, Peter Johansen & Thomas Bentzen, among others. The fundamental basis of New Danish Modern is furniture art, but the line also consist of smaller objects like bowls and a lamp designed by Rikke Hagen. At the fair visitors can also try the Bob-game which is the latest edition to the line and a modern interpretation of the game. Take a look at our blogpost: http://spottedbynormanncopenhagen.com/2009/04/16/meet-bob-in-milan/

What does exhibiting at the Salone del Mobile mean for you? How would you describe the positives (and maybe negatives?) of the experience?

It means a lot to us to participate because we now have extended our brand to include furniture. Salone del Mobile have the perfect settings to meet the right persons in the business, get inspired and give the visitors a closer look at our products. We are proud to be a part of a large fair like this together with some of the designers and manufactures we respect.

We're sorry, it has to be asked - How do you think the current economic situation will affect the climate in the design world, and particularly this year's Milan Salone? Do you foresee any positive or negative knock on effects or adaptations that might happen as a result?

More than ever it is time to focus on good, functional design that can last for generations. We didn't plan the New Danish collection according to the finansial crisis, but the line stresses some of the important issues at the moment. The focus is on quality and craftmanship and is made to last.

Do you have any predictions for trends in design this year?

We like the thought of going back to basics, using the nature's resources and going back to the real craftmanship. We think that the tendency is leaning against more natural products and manufacturing methods.

Is there anything you're especially looking forward to at this year's Salone? Can you let us in on the stands you'll be checking out for yourself/selves or new names to watch?

We like to be open-minded and get inspired by both established and up-coming designers.

And of course, its not all work! Where do you think this year's best Salone party will be?

We will be participating in different events during the fair but have no favourite places in mind.
