The new products on display at the Salone from design giants Vitra had more than a whiff of 'a return to the classics' to them.
Firstly, they showed newly tweaked Eames designs, bringing back the classic Plastic Side Chair and Plastic Armchair in a more comfortable upholstered version and adapting the big daddy of designer chairs, the Eames Lounge Chair, to fit society better today in collaboration with the Eames office and family themselves.
"But it's perfect as it is!" we hear you cry? Well, the reasoning behind this move is that since the Lounge Chair went into production more than 50 years ago, the average height of the human body has increased by up to 10cm, depending on region. So no major visible design change, but now even more comfortable, particularly if you're tall...
In terms of new pieces, trust Vitra to reel in some of the biggest names in design.
Their new 'Suita' Sofa heralds a new phase in the collaboration between Vitra and Antonio Citterio that dates back to 1985. For the first time ever, this corresponds to a furniture type that the 1950-born Citterio has helped shape in a masterly manner to produce a sofa family for the living area. A little bit retro-modern, and we love it.
Also among the new products was 'Flower', by Pritzker Prize winning architecture firm Sanaa. A bench reminiscent of a clover or a three-leaved flower, this rather sweet group stool has been designed primarily for use in public areas, and has a durable covering made of synthetic leather.
