TIMOROUS BEASTIES

TIMOROUS BEASTIES

From their design studio in Glasgow, Timorous Beasties' work has evolved from their original speciality of hand-printed fabrics and wallpaper to cover a wide range of disciplines ranging from graphics to furniture, carpets, glass and interiors. Recently they have curated exhibitions, designed gravestones, worked on a range of cut glass and ceramics, a current project with the Ruskin Archive in Sheffield, graphic work for Nike, a carpet collection for Brintons, a new armchair for SCP, and even their own branded whisky.
Their work could be seen as a wayward take on the often “twee” world of textiles, with heavily illustrative insects, triffid-like plants and large-scale fish. They are also known for their take on the Toile de Jouy fabrics of Napoleonic France, and have designed a number of Toiles based on different cities around the world. The ‘Toile’ designs include a balance of decorative, architectural, and human contexts. Through reference to images of the cityscape, they have articulated an exclusively urban genre, focusing on the under-belly of urban social realism.

Timorous Beasties are upping sticks and will be off to the Salone del Mobile in Milan this year and will be displaying their new fabric designs alongside Nobody and Co. Timorous Beasties and SCP will also be launching the new ‘Chester' chair at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile - Timorous Beasties were asked by SCP to re-design the traditional chesterfield chair - and the result is a comfy leather armchair with button detail.

Find them at The Temporary Museum for New Design at Superstudio Piu, Via Tortona 27 between the 21st and 27th April.
