HANNAH DOLLERY INTERVIEW

Young designer Hannah Dollery studied graphic design for four years in Wellington, New Zealand, achieving a first class honours degree from Massey University.

After working for 18 months at a web-based design firm in Wellington she's re-located to London and is currently working at a boutique design agency in the city.

M.E takes a look into her portfolio and asks a few questions about identity, sustainability and dream commissions...

What drew you to graphic design? Was there a defining moment or was it more a culmination of things?

There wasn't a defining moment as such - I've always known that I wanted to work in the creative industry. I started doing graphic design, architecture and photography at high school, then the natural progression was to continue on doing the things I enjoyed when studying for a degree.

My problem was trying to choose what to major in - I love doing so many different bits of design!

You graduated in New Zealand, but have recently re-located to London. Why London, and how's it going?

London is amazing - this is a city where there is always something new to do or see, and where getting lost can be the most inspirational thing ever! I'll always be a Kiwi girl at heart but at the moment London is the place for me. It's all going very well, I'm working at a boutique design agency in the central city, loving every minute of it.

Your portfolio contains a number of graphic identities and branding projects. What's your process for working these out with the client, and which one was your favourite to do?

I love branding projects - its so exciting to see something move from an idea into an identity. I usually start with getting some basic ideas of what the client wants, pulling some imagery together then drawing out some ideas.

I hate to say it, but my favourite would be my personal branding project - as a designer its always hard to view yourself as a brand, and when you find a mark you like that works, you get that happy feeling inside!

Your final major project at Massey University was concerned with sustainability in graphic design. Can you tell us a little more about it - is this a topic very close to your heart?

Yes I think sustainability is something we all need to be concerned about - and graphic design is no exception. As designers we have the ability to have our work seen by a lot of people - and we need to be making the right choices when it comes to the environment.

What would be your dream commission? Is there anybody you'd like to work with, or a specific thing you'd like to design or even re-design?

At the moment I'm working on lots of new things that I haven't done before, which are all super exciting.

I've always wanted to do a range of stationery - cards, envelopes, posters etc, and that makes me really excited. That and I would love to design a typeface one day - I think it will be a progressive thing that I work on over time, but I can't wait for that!

You say you've got an obsession for typography; so if you were a font, which one would you be and why?

Oh such a hard question! I love typography and there are so many gorgeous typefaces out there to choose from!

I suppose when I try to compare myself to a typeface, I look at something like an Archer - in a hairline italic! Hoefler & Frere-Jones describe Archer as, "...the colourful slab serif - sweet but not saccharine, earnest but not grave, Archer is designed to hit just the right notes of forthrightness, credibility, and charm."
