Hidden clutter, hidden meaning, hidden functions and hidden value are set to become illuminated at Droog New York’s first event and exhibition since their grand store opening back in February. Droog New York is more than a store; posturing more as a unique concept that is at the same time a gallery in which all items are for sale, including pieces of its interior, as you see them or in custom materials and sizes for your home.
For this upcoming exhibit, entitled "Secret Natures", pieces by both established, and up-and-coming designers, incuding FormaFantasma, Chris Kabel, Nacho Carbonell and Luc d’Hanis and Sofi e Lachaert will be on show at the store from May the 16th until June the 30th. Look out for FormaFantasma (comprised of duo Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin) who have explored hidden inlays that intrude on standard production methods, introducing unexpected meaning and craft into a mass produced object crafted from chipboard.
Also forming part of the exhibition will be the Seam chair and bench by Chris Kabel which is a continuation of Kabel’s outcome of Droog’s Dry Tech III project; a chair and bench made of an inexpensive industrial packaging textile that is sewn into the form of the object. To gain rigidity, the textile outfit has been filled with sand and placed in a high pressure high temperature oven, in which the textile melts and cures. The sand is removed leaving a hollow interior and a strong yet lightweight chair and bench.
Skin by Studio Nacho Carbonell is another interesting concept which will be on show where the outermost layer of these pieces can be stretched over things you keep around you, hiding yet revealing daily mess. With forms and heights inspired by fantasy and dreams, Nacho Carbonell aimed to change the point of view on things, reviving one’s curiosity in what might be hidden underneath.
