HONOUR AND REVISE

Japanese retailer Muji, is famous for it's 'no brand' ethos, but we've recently heard that they've done something a little different. For its latest collection, Muji asked James Irvine (currently Thonet's Creative Director)  to update the Thonet Model No. 14; the world's first mass-produced chair which was originally launched in 1859. Konstantin Grcic was also recruited to reinterpret several works by Marcel Breuer. The new versions are produced by the German company Thonet, which not only manufactured the originals but pioneered the modern bentwood and tubular-steel techniques that would be used for decades to come.

M.E. likes the results -  true to Muiji's minimal aesthetic while managing to retain the verve and elegance of the originals. Pick one up at a Muji store soon...
