Originally trained as an architect, Laurent Charlet has expanded his creative view over the last few years to include furniture design, and M.E. is pretty glad he did.
Although furniture design was always a strong focus in his career, it was around 2006 when Charlet actively started designing and building furniture from his New York base under his own name for residential and commercial environments.
Often inspired by the practice of architecture, his custom furniture pieces are the result of a collaborative process involving client and designer, focused on achieving the perfect balance between aesthetics, functionality and craft.
M.E. loves this shelving unit which is part of a series of pieces Charlet is currently prototyping. Envisioned in the future as a complete modular shelving system with a full line of accessories for a variety of configurations, they'll be be built of solid wood, locally sourced and finished with non toxic oils. The design maximises the usable surface and volume of storage while optimising the amount of material required for fabrication.
With elegant thin legs in place of solid side panels, yet remaining strong and sturdy due to the high grade materials involved, this light, contemporary piece has a multitude of uses. We think it would look great filled with books in a home study area, or maybe even used as mini bar by the entertainers amongst you...
