BORDERLINE

French-Japanese couple, Aki and Arnaud Cooren, otherwise known as A+A Cooren, are designers based in Paris who since 1999 have been running their own multi-disciplinary studio - tackling everything from product and furniture design to the creation of event spaces.

For 2010, they've just launched some great new pieces.

'Air Sundae' is a delicate vase in two parts; a design which allows easy water changes as well as creating it's ice cream sundae form. Manufactured by EVCT for A+A Cooren, the piece is a very limited edition - only twelve models will be made.

Also, 'Borderline' is a new light from the pair, which is manufactured by the Slovenian brand, Vertigo Bird.

Two shells – one black, one white – have been joined to form a sharp borderline between dark and light. They’re bound by three velcro bands, leaving the shell edges free of metallic joints. When the lamp is on, the inner white shell diffuses a soft, comfortable light, while the indirect light emitted from the top gives the impression that the lamp is floating below the ceiling. The contrast of black ABS outside and opal white acrylic inside is striking even when the light is off.

The three elements, the shade, the diffusor and the velcro tie bands, are clear and visible features in the design and make the lamp easy to maintain.

Additional fixtures of different typologies have also been added to the ceiling version too. M.E. really likes the 'Big Foot' floor lamp of enlarged proportions, and 'Big Arm' - the Borderline lamp with a cantilevered arm added; also available in two different sizes.

The new version in all white shells will be available from May 2010.

If you'd like to see it in person, the whole Borderline collection will be presented at this year's Light + Building Fair in Frankfurt from 11. – 16. April, 2010 at the Vertigo Bird stand.
