Japanese artist and designer Tokujin Yoshioka has just launched his latest project at Bologna Fiere in collaboration with Italian ceramic tile company Mutina.
Called 'Phenomenon' the design is a bit of a first for Tokujin, who has previously explored many things including snow, water and mirrors in his installations and objects, but tiles are a new one.
Having said that, with this collaboration, Tokujin did draw from his prior works to create these new pieces which express textures derived from nature - a reoccuring theme in much of his work.
'Phenomenon' is a series of patterned tiles named, 'Rain', 'Honeycomb', and 'Snow' which incorporate natural phenomenon and the law of nature into the idea of design; and in the process stir sensation in human beings.
However, rather than opting to manipulate the appearance of nature, Tokujin created a fresh design - reminiscent of each element, but more symbolic than directly representing it.
These poetic and textural ceramics are more like sculpture than tiles for your bathroom.
Gorgeous.
