PLYWOOD MATERIAL PROCESS AND FORM AT MOMA

Opening tomorrow at MoMA is a great exhibition of design for fans of classic modern furniture.

'Plywood: Material, Process, Form' will be installed in MoMA’s Philip Johnson Architecture and Design Galleries, showcasing examples from the museum's collection of modern designs that take advantage of the formal and aesthetic possibilities offered by plywood, dating from around 1930 through the 1950s.

Expect to see iconic furniture by 20th century big guns like Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Arne Jacobsen as well as other types of plywood work including 50s organic platters by Tapio Wirkkala, a 40s architectural model for a prefabricated house by Marcel Breuer and experimental designs for plywood in the aeronautics industry.

All this will be accompanied by a selection of archival photographs too, helping illuminate the process of design and manufacture in plywood.

Not in New York right now?

No worries; you've got nearly all year to get there since the show closes on the 1st of January 2012.
