ROLL TABLES BY TOM DIXON

Amongst the new designs Tom Dixon will be launching at the 2011 Salone del Mobile in Milan are these rather nice 'Roll' tables.

An example of indestructible mechanical practicality, this hard working-table intended for cafe or restaurant use is sturdy and serious - taking its cue from industrial forms - but it has a handy secret too.

Specifically constructed to ease a workers’ burden, there's a rolling wheel on the cast iron base which enables lone waiting staff to reconfigure tables with minimal fuss and assistance.

Tom, as always will be pulling out all the stops in terms of the Salone, with an event called 'Multiplex' too.

He's designed an entire experience for Milan visitors, which includes a pop-up viewing theatre, broadcasting centre, restaurant, shop and gallery installation will allow visitors to explore the multifaceted world of his designs integrated with the cutting edge technology of the BlackBerry PlayBook.

A clear departure from the traditional exhibition booths typical during the Milan Design Week, where the convention is to show single prototypes, Tom's aim is to create up to six working environments all in full use.

Visitors can experience a trail of sensations created through six hyper real environments. Each section explores ideas of luminosity and technology and is to house a Science Lab, Hotel Lobby and Viewing Theatre. A Broadcast Centre is also set to update information daily from all over the fair onto a giant wall of projections.

Bit of a must-see then...
