Design collective Postfossil will be launching this great new collection at the Salone del Mobile this month called 'Trattoria Utopia'.
Showing this year at Ventura Lambrate, Postfossil's central values of sustainability and conscious, critical product consideration are explored through the idea of a trattoria, with Designasyl joining in to create a food installation.
Conical serving plates by Christine Birkhoven, a lovely folding seat by Florian Hauswirth, stools inspired by shopping baskets by Claudia Heiniger and a series of very special cutlery and crockery by Thomas Walde are among the highlights.
Our favourite is Florian Hauswirth's maple Democratic Chess set - a new take on the traditional chess game. Not only has the designer altered the forms of the pieces, but also re-interpreted their potential functions; increasing the unpredictability of the game.
The set can be played in the normal way, used as a construction game by children, or played in a new way where pieces taken are not eliminated but stacked, thus creating new figures which have more abilities. For example, a knight or even a second queen can be made from several pawns...
