CHANGE LAMP BY TIMO NISKANEN

Finnish designer Timo Niskanen will be bringing this sleek lamp to the DMY Berlin festival this week.

Asking for change in more ways than one, 'Change' is a coin deposit lamp - currently in the prototype stage.

Apparently, 95 percent of lighting's detrimental environmental impact occurs during usage, so Timo designed 'Change' as a tasklight for public spaces (for intance, public libraries) which encourages you to turn the light off when you leave your desk.

A coin deposit operates as a light switch, and the user turns the light on by inserting a coin into a slot. When the coin is removed, the light goes off. If the user forgetfully leaves the light on, some 'helpful' person can pocket their money by turning the light off.

This kind of thoughtful design is something Timo has been exploring for a while as he's especially interested in human behaviour and specifically, how it can take account in design processes.

"We are surrounded with complicated and unnecessary things. I think a good product feels natural - it only bears the essential. A good designer creates an experience out of something simple and functional. An experience that is meaningful." he says.

Take a look at 'Change' and Timo's other sustainable lighting designs at DMY Berlin from the 1st to the 5th of June.
