SMOLTEN MIRRORS BY COMMONWEALTH

Design product or sculpture?

It's hard to tell here, but what is obvious is that this project from US-based studio Commonwealth is a beautiful one.

Poured as a solid block of silicon bronze, Commonwealth's 'Smolten Mirrors' are hand-held, reflective surfaces that fuse littered, intricate form with precisely polished planes.

Giving in to neither an ordered sense of digital formalism, nor the gestural markings common to hand-crafted objects, the 'Smoltens' navigate a fine line between two traditions.

Incredibly precious and almost geological in feel, the mirrors were presented as part of this year's New Americans exhibition at MATTER in NoHo during the ICFF.
