We'll admit, this took a double take from us to work out exactly what was going on with these ‘Hexalights’ by Marcus Tremonto.
The series of 2D cartoon pendant lamps have been designed by New York-based Tremonto for design behemoth Moss, and are the latest in a series of illustration-based works that draw inspiration from French Pop comics of the 1960s.
The simple, bold forms utilise electroluminescent paper (apparently first developed in 1960 for use in automotive instrument panel backlighting) which contains an organic material that gives off light when an electric current goes through it.
This, sandwiched between two thin layers of plastic is a rather distinct way of using light, and quite different from standard incandescent lights in that there is no emission of heat.
The effect here; when paired with cartoon-y cubes is one of delightful trickery.
Love.
