Born in England and raised in the Netherlands, Damian O'Sullivan studied industrial design at the Royal College of Art in London and upon completing his Masters, started his design career by designing bags and accessories for Hermès.
A good start, you might think, but Damian's career seems to have gone from strength to strength. Following Hermès, O'Sullivan joined Philips Design in Eindhoven, and four years later he set up his own design office: Damian O'Sullivan Design, with a mission to provide new and original work for a diverse range of clients.
Since then, Damian's assignments have been as diverse as they have been interesting: an 18 metre high landmark in London, a water sculpture for Anish Kapoor, perfume bottles for Comme des Garçons, concepts for Lexus Cars, plus shoe designs for Paul Smith, Asics and Camper.
These 'Zodiac' plates are just one of O'Sullivan's many projects, and although pretty small scale in comparison to some of his work, we love the combination of a poetic concept, a minimal appearance, and the use of traditional craft techniques.
Inspired in part by Achille Castiglione’s birth medals and Le Corbusier’s Firminy chapel, each plate features a constellation where the 'stars' are tiny areas of thinner porcelain - created using the ancient Chinese 'rice-grain' method.
The constellation holes are made in the plate, but are then filled during the glazing stage which leaves small transparent dots after they come out of the kiln.
We reckon these beautiful pieces would make a great gift, or collect the whole range for a horoscope dining set.
