REEL CABINET AND TIE DESK BY CARLSTEN THOSTRUP

Swedish designer duo Elin Carlsten and Elisabet Thostrup have just launched these two rather industrial-looking furniture pieces at this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair.

Developed with the concepts of identity and origin in mind, the Reel Cabinet and Tie Desk are storage units defined by their striking mechanisms and details.

The Reel Cabinet was inspired by an old barn door, where large wheels allow the doors to roll open and be closed up in the same manner.

The Tie Desk (M.E.'s favourite of the two pieces) is Elin and Elisabet's response to "...all the mess that work from home results in."

To combat mess, they designed a modern writing desk which opens up like a box. The closure detail is drawn from a product popular in New York in the 1880s; a new type of envelope that opened and was sealed by wrapping a cord between two round cardboard buttons.

By wrapping the strap around the metal buttons, the Tie Desk can be all closed up into a handsome piece of furniture when you're finished for the day.
