One of the major events over the weekend at this year's Dutch Design Week was the opening of the Design Academy Eindoven's graduate galleries, showcasing the final projects from some seriously good young design talent.

We spotted this piece from Andrea Bandoni and Joana Meroz who both gained their Masters this year.

“The Object Without a Story is an investigation into the relationship between objects and their stories, beginning with the observation that the relationship we have with objects is defined by their stories. Bandoni and Meroz focused on two key questions: Does the mediation of the story change our relationship to an object? How? - As a designer, can I manipulate the stories in favour of my object? In which ways?

Having made an in-depth analysis of hundred of texts accompanying design objects, the designers used the most significant words, expressions and contents to create random stories. They then created the objects described by these tales, one of which is this; The Archetypical Vase.

Although the narratives sound coherent, they are in fact completely arbitrary, thus questioning the validity of creating and understanding objects through stories. The designers concluded that the object should be the starting point for multiple interpretations rather than it being monopolized by the “official” one. With this proposal the viewer is always a co-creator of the meaning of the object. 

M.E. loves this concept, but it also doesn't hurt that the object itself is gorgeously put together...
