COMPULSIVE VIEWING

'Holiday' is an installation piece by Laura Burchett, a Fine Art student currently at Bournemouth University, and M.E. thinks it's a fascinating and engaging project.

Through producing predominantly text based installations, (of which 'Holiday is just one) Burchett portrays the vicious Obsessive Compulsive cycle of triggers which bring on intrusive thoughts and unrealistic appraisals surrounding the police, leading to the compulsive rituals and behaviours displayed in an avoidance to the obsession.

By seeking to produce an external image of the internal thought processes behind Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; Burchett’s practice transforms formal cognitive behavioural documentation of everyday situations, creating immersive installations which depict the demolition of daily activities by OCD.

In 'Holiday', Burchett's use of red wool brings connotations of danger and anxiety and associations of connectivity of the material in relation to the text. Engaging the viewer through the application of the theory of multiple intelligences as identified by Howard Gardner, external receptors (sight, hearing, touch, taste) are drawn in; and begin to take on the pace, energy and anxiety of the OCD thought processes.

These images go some way to documenting the level of detail involved in the installation, but Laura's website also has a number of videos which allow you to experience the piece too...
