The winner of the 2011 Time to Design new talent award has just been announced.
And from today, the results can be seen at Normann Copenhagen, where 29 year old German designer, Milia Seyppel, educated at Bauhaus Universität in Weimar, will be exhibiting a series of lamps under the title of 'Petits Frères' until December the 8th.
Through the process Milia has tested possibilities as well as limits of materials themselves in regard to reproduction of the envisioned shapes and forms she wanted to make. The result is a triumvirate of lamps in metal and glass that in themselves tells a story about a design language where the driven factor is craft knowhow and curiosity on how the material can be challenged.
“Their forms are inspired by early machines and industrial architecture" Milia explains.
"Each is individual in character and personality, while remaining a part of the family entity. Aside from the difference in form and colour, there is a diversification of switch mechanisms, each in accordance with the shape and function of the lamp. The lamps can be seen as siblings, alike and at the same time very different.”
As a result of her win, Milia has been granted with three months residency at the Danish Art Workshops, 50.000 DKK donated by the Danish Ass. of Wood and Furniture Industries, a two week exhibition at the Normann Copenhagen Flagship Store, and career coaching by the company OeO.
This years guest members of the Jury are the Icelandic Director of Iceland Design Centre Halla Helgadóttir, the Danish designer and architech Nicolai de Gier, and the Danish architecht Kjeld Vindum.
