GRAVITY STOOLS BY JOLAN VAN DER WIEL

Jólan van der Wiel graduated this summer from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy; and here's his final project; a 'Gravity Stool' which gets its unique shape thanks to magnetic fields and the power of gravity.

"Departing from the idea that everything is influenced by gravitation, a force that has a strongly shaping effect, I intended to manipulate this natural phenomenon by exploiting its own power: magnetism." says Jólan.

"The positioning of the magnetic fields in the machine, opposing each other, has largely determines the final shape of the Gravity Stool."

It's apparently the combination of the 'magnetmachine' with plastic material, (developed especially for this purpose) that has enabled Jólan to start a small but efficient chain of production.

One which he's currently exploring further to include objects as well as these furniture pieces.

"The forms and products are characterized by the freakish and organic shapes that are so typical of nature itself. As a designer, I see future potential in the joined cooperative forces combining technology with natural phenomena."

An interesting concept - and one we'll keep and eye on - as M.E. sees potential in this too...
