IMAGINOLAND BY ONDREJ CHMEL

Take a look at 'Imaginoland'; a new project by young Czech artist Ondrej Chmel.

Currently based in Glasgow where he's pursuing his postgraduate studies in Photography at the Glasgow School of Art, Chmel's chief area of interest is the concept of darkness:

"I guess it's even because of the lived notion, that whatever might be understood as a darkness is somehow negative or dangerous." Chmel says.

"Only because we aren't able to understand the merit of the subject. I believe, that where there is light, there is darkness as well. Therefore I began to work and explore the light, using artificial lights - increasingly pyrotechnnics - to light and inflect the outdoor environments, both rural and urban in an order to progress in understanding the darkness."

This latest project has seen Chmel interpreting the relationship between space and imagination, depicting "...fragile relations of colours interacting with landscapes, as bodies of mass reveal themselves only when hidden by the blanket of night."

It's certainly a powerful series - and their ambiguity has us wondering if we see glimpses of creation or destruction in Imaginoland...
