This impressive design for the Spanish Pavillion at the Expo Shanghai 2010 from Miralles Tagliabue (EMBT) has picked up the award for Top Future Project at the World Architecture Festival Awards in Barcelona.
The Barcelona-based studio, Miralles Tagliabue (EMBT) proposed a design that develops the handicraft technique of wicker weaving into the practice of construction - and the universal language of the material works to build a bridge between Spain, and China where the structure is currently being built.
Lead architect on the project, Benedetta Tagliabue designed the pavilion with the volumetric, material, and structural inspirations drawn from a wicker basket. The void of the stands will mold a pavilion in which tubular metal supports will sustain a wicker grid that wraps the pavilion, filters light and function as a climatic membrane.
